Mandate

Administration of the Group Personal Accident (GPA) insurance cover for civil servants.

What is GPA?

The government has arranged an insurance cover against death and injuries for all civil servants.

The GPA covers death and injuries caused solely by external visible means. The policy provides for compensation, in the event of death and permanent total disablement (based on continental scale) of an officer's annual basic salary (excluding allowances) at the time of accident or death, whichever is greater.

The policy is worldwide in its scope for employees, officially seconded to foreign missions abroad and/or on study programmes sponsored by the Government of Kenya and/or its development partners. For the purpose of personal travel, the policy is worldwide in its scope foe a period not exceeding six (6) weeks and shall be inoperative in respect of any insured person residing permanently outside Kenya.

The terms of the policy states that claims on death or injury occurring as a result of accident should be reported to the underwriter by Treasury as soon as possible and in any case not later than 8 months of occurrence of the accident.

Death claims must be notified using Death Advice Proforma form together with Police Abstract Report, Death Certificate and pay slip or payroll extract for the immediate month preceding the accident/bodily injury. However, in the event that the supporting documents are not obtained immediately, it is recommended that the death claim be lodged immediately pending their submission at a later date.

Injury claims must be notified using Injury Advice Proforma form with the doctor's medical certificate and police abstract report where applicable. The claimant must also have been attended to at a Government hospital or a privately registered hospital recognized by the National Hospital Insurance Fund within the republic of Kenya.
